CONCUSSION DIAGNOSIS: BEYOND “HOW MANY FINGERS AM I HOLDING UP?”

Team: Stephen Broglio (Kinesiology and Medical School), Mohammed Islam (CoE), Ioulia Kovelman (LSA), Alex Rogers (Medical School) and Xiaosu Hu (Center for Human Growth and Development)

Summary: Researchers aim to develop a novel brain measure protocol with concussed individuals, implementing Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS), allowing for a non-invasive detection and assessment of oxidative metabolism concussion biomarkers associated with brain function and physiology alterations that will aid clinicians in concussion diagnosis and return-to-play decision-making.
